- The Compound Effect and A Healthy Life
“People are either motivated by something they want, or something they don’t want.” – Darren Hardy Profound success is the result of small, smart choices completed consistently over time—and it applies to every area of your life, whether it’s your work, relationships, finances or your health. That’s the theory behind The Compound Effect, a book [...]
- Mining the Millennials

Millennials, also known as Gen Y-ers (80 million, born between 1980 and 1995), were raised by overly doting parents who coddled their self-esteem like fragile Fabergé eggs. They played in little leagues where the score wasn't kept and where everyone was a winner and everyone got a trophy for just showing up.
Having hired, worked with and trained many, I had concluded that millennials were simply lazy, undisciplined, unmotivated, over-entitled and disengaged, with the attention span of goldfish.
Then I joined the Board of Directors of an organization called Invisible Children, founded by and made up entirely of millennials. I was quickly humbled to the fact that it is not that they are unmotivated, inattentive or disengaged—they were just unmotivated, inattentive and disengaged in working for ME!… CLICK HERE TO READ REST OF POST
- The American Dream Attained
Imagine movie stars, business magnates, decorated military leaders, bankers, media moguls, recording artists and members of the judiciary in one room—a very big room. What kind of event would draw such a diverse group?
The only thing these people share is that they’ve overcome early financial hardships through their own diligence and hard work, and created their own success stories. They’re members and supporters of the Horatio Alger Association and, while their career paths are varied, their experiences offer proof that the American dream is attainable.
SUCCESS magazine has profiled many of them, most recently Leonardo DiCaprio, who was among the new members inducted in a ceremony in April. Others we have profiled include astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Famous Amos’ Wally Amos, Starbucks’ Howard Schultz, energy titan T. Boone Pickens, music producer Quincy Jones, boxer and businessman George Foreman, and PepsiCo’s Indra Nooyi.
Two years ago, I wrote to Horatio Alger Association officials to ask about media credentials. There are no media credentials, I was told; this is not a media event. I wrote back to explain that… CLICK HERE TO READ REST OF POST
- Are You Building SUSTAINABLE Success?

This past week my wife Georgia and I spent some time touring the 116-year-old Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. This 175,000-square-foot home on 8,000 acres still emanates its founder's–George Washington Vanderbilt's–illustrious grandeur… and it remains (remarkably) privately owned.
Of course my inquiring SUCCESS mind wanted to figure out how. Although much of the robber-baron wealth of his grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt (earned through shipping and railroads in early 1800s) has dissipated through his heirs, Biltmore Estate continues to thrive because it was founded on a vision of sustainability. While many of the Gilded Age estates have been reduced to rubble, taken over by the state or sold to nonprofit entities, Biltmore remains a privately owned, for-profit working estate.
Sustainability is the capacity to endure; to be diverse and productive over time; exhibiting the potential for long-term maintenance and well-being.
George Vanderbilt's vision wasn't only to build the largest private home in America (which it is still today 100+ years later) but to also have it be self-supporting.
In addition to the grand estate, George also had built… CLICK HERE TO READ REST OF POST
- Laughter Is Good for the ‘Sole’
Wearing bright red socks, no shoes and a cheeky grin for the June 2011 cover story, actor and comedian Steve Martin tells SUCCESS magazine why after decades in the spotlight, he stays on his toes to deliver new material.
“It’s quite easy to be what others might call ‘disciplined,’” Martin says. “I love playing music. I love writing. And I love performing.”
To highlight Martin’s apparent lack of shoes, SUCCESS magazine has teamed with Nashville-based Soles4Souls that distributes shoes to people in need throughout the world. The organization has given away over 5.5 million pairs of shoes since 2005.
Soles4Souls founder Wayne Elsey was moved to action when he saw an image of a lone shoe washed up on the beach after the 2004 tsunami hit Southeast Asia. One shoe. One life. One big mission. In just eight weeks, he collected more than 250,000 pairs of shoes for Southeast Asians. Today, his sights are set higher. Soles4Souls aims to collect 11 million pairs of shoes in 2011, called the 11 in 11 initiative. SUCCESS magazine hopes to bring Soles4Souls that much closer to its goal.

- Zig Ziglar’s Success Habits: Your Journey to the Top
Personal development icon Zig Ziglar told SUCCESS in October 2008, “I’m a constant learner. You need to be a constant student because things change and you have to change and grow. And I emphasize the word grow,” he says. Here are Zig Ziglar’s five habits for your journey to the top: Be a constant leader. [...]
- What Mark Zuckerberg Taught Us about Our Readers
What do you not know about Mark Zuckerberg?
Facebook founder. Billionaire boy wonder. And by now, you know he’s the SUCCESS 2010 Achiever of the Year.
When we first began throwing out names of candidates for the award, Zuckerberg’s was right up there. The SUCCESS team along with freelance writer Sally Deneen continued to research and discuss as we strived to come up with a stellar list of nominees.
Even though we would present the nominees to readers for the final vote, we couldn’t help but assess them ourselves: Oprah Winfrey’s move to found her OWN network was gutsy and inspiring; master innovator Steve Jobs had wowed the world again with the iPad; Warren Buffett’s and Bill and Melinda Gates’ brand of philanthropy was bringing attention, money and solutions to the world’s most intractable problems; Chris Anderson’s idea-sparking TED forums were morphing and expanding, bringing even more of the brightest minds in technology, entertainment and design together in public TEDx events worldwide; and then there was Zuckerberg, who had changed the way we connect with each other.
But there was something else about Zuckerberg—a little movie called The Social Network that was starting to generate buzz. The movie was sure to be a blockbuster, but word was that Zuckerberg was cast as an overly ambitious and uncaring villain. Would our readers be turned off?
Which brings me to what you don’t know about Zuckerberg…
- Knocked on Your Tush (Part 2 of 4)
Continuing our series on what you do when you get knocked on your keister, let me lay out a four-point plan you can use to overcome any obstacle you will ever face in life—a plan to turn any tragedy or setback into triumph. Here is No. 1: I interviewed Roger Crawford recently, who was born with a physical handicap that affected all four of his limbs from the elbows down and from the knees down, leaving him with two fingers on his left wrist on one on his right, a partially developed right leg with three toes, and his left leg from the knee down was amputated. But he became a world-class tennis player, recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of the most accomplished athletes in history.
During our interview Roger made this very profound statement: “We are, often times, the one who creates our own handicaps.” Meaning, many times our obstacles are self-induced. Or, even real obstacles continue to have a hold on us because of these mental handicaps. I think we lose proper perspective. So true.
This might help you gain perspective…
- Landing the Big One:
The Story Behind SUCCESS Profilesby Lisa Ocker
So much in life hinges on these things: relationship-building, persistence and resourcefulness. Paul Scott Adamo, SUCCESS talent executive, knows this very well.
Since the early issues following SUCCESS magazine’s re-launch in 2008, Paul has helped book interviews with celebrities, prominent businesspeople, entrepreneurs and sports figures. Based in New York, Paul has more than 10 years’ experience as a producer, talent executive and casting director for television, radio and print.Increasingly, publicists come to Paul with requests for SUCCESS stories on their clients. But more often, it takes months or years of Paul’s persistent follow-ups to land the interview. But there’s more to Paul’s job than following up; he looks for opportunities—such as new movies, books, business developments or charitable ventures—these extraordinary achievers want to promote. In addition to staying in touch with publicists, Paul attends book expos, industry events and parties, and movie screenings.
“You have to be persistent and never give up,” Paul says. “It can take a day to book someone—or two years.”
Such was the case with our January cover feature on…
- How to Multiply Your Success: The Compound Effect—Revealed!
Today is the birthday of The Compound Effect—Multiplying Your Success. One Simple Step at a Time! Through all the labor pains I’ve endured while creating this book, today is the day!
As a man, I think this is as close as I can ever get to gestating, worrying about and carrying the burden of nurturing a child for nine-plus months, and then, finally (and not without pain), give birth to this thing you have worked so hard to develop and care for.
- Freytag: Fitness Myth Busters
“The difference between a myth and a fact is good science.” I love this phrase…. You see, fitness and weight loss don’t need to be complicated, but I often overhear gym-goers discussing fitness advice that just isn’t true. Let me try to shed some light on several urban myths by looking at the science.
- How to Change the World
This article could change the life you experience forever. No joke.
I want to show you how to completely change the world… in an instant.
This might be a bit controversial for many, and even more won’t have the stomach to do what I am suggesting…
- How to Guarantee a GREAT Day, Every Day
Every Monday morning I have a standing radio interview I enjoy very much. But you can imagine that it can become routine. To prevent this, the host doesn’t tell me the topic before we go live on the air—now that puts some excitement into it!
- Become the Leader You Were Meant to Be
When it came time for Robin Sharma to carve out a life for himself, becoming a lawyer seemed right. Although he had loving parents, there was never abundance during his childhood, and he was determined to find a way to prosper as an adult. His life as a litigation lawyer provided money, status and all the trappings of the success he envisioned. But Sharma felt something was missing—that a vital part of him was silently starving to death.
- Don’t Let Conflict Keep You from Success
Anytime you are making ground and moving toward success, there will inevitably be the opportunity for conflict. That is just a fact of life. You put two people or more in a group and there is potential for conflict—and conflict, improperly handled, can destroy your ability to continue on and achieve your goals. This is [...]
- Don’t Stop Asking So Many Questions
A few years ago I took my boy on a trip that we make together every year. We left the house at 6 a.m. on Monday and got home at 9 p.m. on Thursday. That is just 87 hours. However, that is 84,293 questions! I mean, 10-year-old kids can ask questions! They are question machines! [...]
- He’s an Idol, She’s an Idol, I’m an Idol…
This past Tuesday night, there was nothing on television. Typically, my Tuesdays, beginning in January and all through May, are filled with American Idol and the heartbreak, the laughter and the hours of dialing and texting votes for our favorite Idol. But just because a winner was crowned nearly a week ago, it doesn’t mean [...]

- The Revolution of the Mind – Take back your mind and take back control of your life
As an animal, we are pretty weak. Think about it. In a battle—man against lion, tiger or bear—we’re in trouble. As a species we are smaller, slower, weaker and more fragile. We don’t see as well, hear as well and are more vulnerable to the elements. Yet we rule the Earth. How? The one thing [...]

- All Excuses Abolished – You CAN Achieve Success At Any Age!
I’m too old, too young or too poor. I don’t have the education. I’m not from the right family. I don’t have the connections, etc., ad nauseam. I feel one of our jobs here at SUCCESS is to abolish the excuses we were fed to believe for why we are not living up to our [...]
- 3-Point Game Plan to (Way More!) Productive Meetings
I was interviewed this week by a journalist seeking input on how to schedule and hold more successful meetings. It is a very important topic, so I share these points with you… I think it would be a frightening statistic to know how much productive life force is squashed in unproductive, rudderless, meandering, ineffective, blathering, [...]
